Recently someone asked me “what is the role of the Parish Council?” Well the quick answer is, to help preserve that which makes us want to live here, while stimulating progress in those areas which can improve life across the community.

Thinking further, I recalled the many files, paperwork and accounts in our parish clerk’s office - some of it destined to be circulated among the parish councillors, either for information or action…. planning applications, footpaths, hedges, highways, traffic calming, signage, allotments, grass cutting, rivers, flooding, recreation and play area maintenance etc. etc.....   As the end of another financial year approaches the actual costs against the budget set in January 2007 are in line and there is likely to be a small surplus to take forward to the next financial year.

Savings were made on the negotiations of cheaper insurance through a corporate deal with Norwich Union for Parish Councils – unfortunately this saving was offset by the expensive process of having an election! Despite careful budgeting in this regard EHDC charged £600 more than quoted which we had to pay. ..... More>>

The next Annual Parish Assembly was held held on Wednesday April 23rd at 7.00pm.

A packed meeting discussed a variety of points including motorised transport on bridle paths, traffic speeding through the village, the future of East Meon's sub post office and blocked drains.

There were prsentations from the District Councillor, the new Head of East Meon Church of England Primary School, the Community Relations Manager of the HindheadTunnel and Ron Ingerson on the Greening Campaign. ... Pictures>>

 
The guest speaker was Ian Whyte, Community Relations Manager for the A3 Hindhead Tunnel projec.

The £371m A3 Hindhead improvement scheme, which includes a 1.9km (1.2 mile) twin bore tunnel under the Devil’s Punch Bowl Site of Special Scientific Interest is now under construction and Mr Whyte gave an insight into this massive construction project, being undertaken with special attention to doormice, snakes and archaeologists.
